Week 2

I’ve been pleasantly busy with my pottery wheel and have, so far, produced a few bowls, a dish and a vase since I retired.  And, whatever furniture I haven’t moved around yet, it will soon find a new place.  I’m Feng Shui-ing my home to death—that’s what I’ve been doing everyday. I love the ease of no time constraints.

Curt’s mom, Linda, is in Atlanta now. Elaine is due tomorrow. Please send prayers for an easy delivery, and a healthy baby.  I will fly down next week for my turn to help take care of the newborn and the twins.

Love and good health to all!

Day 1, as a retiree

So yesterday was my last day of work.

It took me a while to decide on this retirement thing (as far back as 3 years ago)—but working for the past ten years at Public Works in Quantico had been fun. I’ve been called NUTS because I did enjoy work and refused to retire, but it had truly been a constant growth for me. I have enjoyed the personal satisfaction I got from a job well done; I have had beautiful work relationships with everyone.

I’ve had the pleasure of working with our turnover planning deputy heads—young ENSIGNS, who, I instantly felt an affinity to, like sons; and some, I am proud to say, have gotten up in the ranks, and are now Lt. Commanders with important assignments one can surely be proud of. (Check out Rob Ballister

—he’s got a new book, “God Does Have a Sense of Humor"out); and Brian Clapp who’s had a couple of tours in Iraq (thank God, he’s back and well) and is now working for the White House.

I had come from the old school. When I started working in 1980 I was a draftsman (none of that politically-correct term as a draftsperson, yet)—the only woman amongst the ilk of Engineers and Architects; where the tools of the trade I used were: a big-sized drafting board, a long T-Square and the 30/60/90 degree triangles and the old Leroy Lettering set; and we made calculations using the slide rule! My Commanders and their Civilian counterparts were truly older and well, Old-School-type-commanding. Now I’ve become one of the oldest employees, a senior citizen, Commanders are in their late 30’s, early 40’s, young enough to be my sons or daughters; and the office is now teeming with women of all disciplines! I know and feel I have come a long way amid Cyber Space and new Technology.

As time goes, I’m learning to no longer mind being called a Senior—as the term comes with a 10% percent discount, I like that part.

So now I have taken the big step! And even though I’ll finally have all the time on my own pace, I shall probably miss the old grind…

Later, I would probably say that I don’t miss work, but I miss the people I used to work with—I will probably lie.

Now I can visit with my children and grandchildren for as long as they’ll have me; I can pamper the grandkids—and looking forward to the new grandbaby due in 2 weeks!

Then I have a lot of Pottery work to produce and create before Christmas!

We’ll see if I will have the discipline to do all these, and a daily blog, too.
